I've been using a new tool, Descript, for editing audio and video, and it's definitely made my life a lot easier. It's actually a game-changer. However, within the tool, there's a feature called Overdub that allows the program to read text in your voice, without you having to record it. Let me show you:
So what do you think? Useful, or not?
Also, here's a link to a video where I show you more about how awesome this tool is for general editing for podcasts and videos:

I’ve seen this. It’s cool. There are other softwares that will imitate your voice, but this includes editing, so v. clever!
Unreal! There goes fivers movie trailer voices.
I need that scary tool 🙂
Hold up! so the movie trailer voice from honest trailers is an computer!?!
Truly mind-blowing 🤯! I signed up when you shared it a few day ago. It’s revolutionary! Thanks again. But, can it let us hear Abe Lincoln give the Gettysburg Address?
Super Meta Moment: Watching this video come up when I loaded Descript to edit my course videos…
And this could be next level for replacing those little flubs I sometimes make…
It’s fantastic! My own voice avatar! On those days when the client needs some corrections and my voice is not quite ready to match this would be a lifesaver! But you’re right …there is a security side that has to be addressed…I’d hate to hear myself doing a commercial that I myself didn’t record!
We’ve been using descript and it’s AI vocal feature for some time now. I can’t tell you how much time we have saved by using it. This is a tool that I strongly recommend anybody and everybody who’s in podcasting to use if they are in the financial position to do so.
This is seriously amazing~yet scary! I agree my brother! So good to see you! God’s blessings to you and your family! – Charles
It is a great tool as long as it’s used correctly.
Wow! That’s pretty incredible and scary. I’m typing this with your voice in my head.
I think it’s awesome! HOWEVER, this is very dangerous to identity theft, ruining reputations, propaganda, etc.
This could be the replacement for the standard Alexa voice.
I saw this when you shared descript a few days ago. Do not like this feature at all, dangerous territory…If this system is hackable, and I believe every system is, can’t defend myself if horrible things were ever said in my own voice…Also gives me that Terminator vibe! Lol
Definitely on the scary side. Amazing, but scary.
It’s incredible. I was working on a short film and we needed to make some corrections to some of the actor’s work, and Overdub did a great job for us. Pat, I love how you did your demo too.
Before the creation of audio recordings, people probably didn’t know their voice sounded different than it did in their head.
This is extremely dangerous. As I learned in my lifetime, every single really awesome thing or technique is finally ALWAYS used in the worst manner possible.
BTW… because you read the text about the pinguines….. Here is something really awesome done by nature: these pinguines staying there in the coldest times of the year, guarding and nesting their egg, are the males only. While the females head to the equator to gain weight and grow strong, the males stay with the egg. Hereby they stand very closely in a circle and every about 15 minutes, the males from the center move to the outside circle. This is how they keep each other and the eggs warm, while suffering great weight loss. Awesome fathers, these guys. 😉
At the moment we are in uncanny valley – emulate voice, animation, 3D.. when its getting close to real life it really have to be spot on – otherwise its wierd.
We are getting there and propably 1-2 years its here.
Thanks Pat for this video. This answered a lot of my questions about how to train my voice for an overdub. I can see immediate application opportunities for my podcast. I did a manual overdub in Audition the other day when I said the wrong word twice and had to go hunt the word down elsewhere in the script and copy and then paste in the right spot. This will save me so much time fixing those types of errors.
My second use for this will be the transcriptions. We are paying Rev right now to transcribe every episode of our daily show – because we use the transcript for closed captions on YouTube and the transcript is edited for our blog.
My third use for this (and the reason I just used your link to pay for an annual subscription for pro) is to create my next book. I started out a blogger first – before podcasting and video. I thought better on paper first. I now think better by talking through a subject and if it’s typing as I go, it will be easy to edit and produce. BAM! Thanks again for introducing me to this. You’re my new best friend. 🙂
😱 OMG! I’m in pain. I’m dyslexic and I’m pretty sure those testing scripts aren’t even complete sentences. Got my work cut out for me. LOL. 😱
