In this video, I'll teach you how to record and edit a podcast in Audacity so that you can create a professional sounding podcast episode.
Audacity works for both MAC and PC users, and can be downloaded for free here:
For MAC users, if you want something more MAC-like in experience, try using Garageband. It's also free and is likely on your computer already. Here's a full tutorial for how to use Garageband that will help you:
In this tutorial, I walk you through all the simple steps you need to take in order to make this simple, especially moving forward after you get a few episodes under your podcasting belt.
Please note that this is a lesson pulled from my premium podcasting course, Power-up Podcasting ( ), so if you hear references to other videos or lessons in the course, that's why they are there.
Finally, if you've found this video and you have yet to set anything up or plan your podcast, I recommend checking out my #1 podcasting tutorial on YouTube that'll help you get started from scratch here:

I can’t believe you had the audacity to post a video like this. Wonderful … as always.
Great tutorial Pat!
I’d like to add a tip for editing a podcast in Audacity. In the top right corner there is a small green button and right next to it you can adjust the playback speed. When editing I usually speed up the playback to 1.70x-1.80x. This allows me to speed up the playback while editing and saves me lots of time. Also this function does not alter your final file in any way and the software exports the file at regular speed.
Oh man this is huge, editing always takes 2-3 times longer than the actual length of the episode. Thanks!
I am happy to hear you liked this tip 🙂
Love this! Thank you so much, Pat! I have been listening to you for a long time now and you have been SO generous. Really appreciate you!
Can’t thank you enough, I’ve watched this several times and finally got a little recording down! You are amazing! If you can teach this ol girl from the technically challenged generation, you deserve amazing!!
wow! thank you, you’ve made something that looks sooooo complicated seem sooooo simple, made my first podcast jingle yesterday and its gone down really well, thank you.
Pat, thank you so much for putting this tutorial out there! I have been procrastinating starting a podcast because the tech was overwhelming to me but you broke it all down in this mini series and made it super easy to so. I just recorded my first set of podcasts so thank you very much! 😀
It was awesome. actually I was afraid of the tech part of it, but he made it soooo easy.
hi
You and me girl. I get scared of anything technical. I actually bought a course on podcasting before watching this and I must say I learned some things I didn’t learn from the other course. And Pat has a way of making things easier to understand. Editing my own podcast still scares me but I guess we’ll eventually get used to it like they say. I wish I didn’t have to bother myself with this technical side of things.
My favorite part is when he says “…we’re gonna be talking about this and that and also that.”
How far does specific headphones. I was considering maybe starting a podcast with my friend and I have a gaming Logitech g430 Headset and am wondering if it matter what headphones you have
“QUESTION” I have my music tracks on 1 & 2. I’m recording lead vocal on Track 3. The music from tracks 1 & 2 goes to track 3 during recording. How do I fix that?
Thanks so much for this! We are new to recording although I used to be sound tech for a Vineyard church years ago. My husband will be recording for a radio show and your pointers are invaluable! Now to find a royalty free music clip and we’ll be all set.
Thank you so much for doing this video. I have used the tools to start editing my first podcast episode and it probably would have taken twice as long to figure this stuff out myself. You have a new subscriber 🙂
This is the best tutorial on Audacity I’ve seen so far.
Not sure if you fixed this but it could possibly be that they’re playing as you’re recording track 3’s vocals? If so, just mute track one and 2 or use headphones when recording the vocals.
How’s it going so far? Since I’ve been creating audio products I’ve noticed that it’s best to upgrade when you feel ready, when you feel the intrinsic need to. You will become more skilled as you go and will require higher quality tools in order to tweak what you’re creating/hearing. You can buy this industry standard stuff now but it won’t make much difference if you don’t know how to use it properly.
What a phenomenal job! You made this so easy and now I a will be ready to start using this program. Thank you!
This was exactly what I was looking for! I love how you get right to it and don’t waste a ton of time just talking. My Audacity skill just got a huge boost. My podcast is much better off now! Thanks again!
Just the thing I was looking for. Wasn’t quite clear to me how to make the music start before the actual talking part, but now it is! Also found the info on the volume tool (forgot the real name😂) very useful. Thank you so much!
Thanks broski x
SwéZi Asé Hi! Do you plug the headphones into your laptop?
whenever i record it doesn’t make a new track, it keeps continuing in track 1 for example.
How do i fix this?
Nah but lower quality mic affects the audio quality
I’m planning to create a podcast where I do overviews of my most favorite show, The X-files. I lnow there are a lot out there but i mostly want to do it for myself and if people love it, thats a bonus. I’m learning a lot from your videos.
I’m the same. Not x files but hoping to do three twenty minute pods a week. One just being a little bit of a moan or take on news. One about football (Manchester United) and a final one about retro raw(wrestling) review. All subjects that have many big podcasts about already but I just wanna give it a shot. I hope your podcast goes well. Point being who cares if there’s loads out there, none are yours and it will be special for you. Best of luck and wishing you success.
Nice one!
your the guy on pawnstars
Adrianisdeadinside I’ve never been on Pawn Stars, but have been on a couple dozen other TV shows.
@John Pullum oh my bad hardcore pawn
@Adrianisdeadinside I was on one episode of that. They filmed it at a shop around 20 minutes or so from my house.
The audacity of Apple to make the “append record” the opposite of the windows version…
On Windows, you just press record.
Praise. This was one of the smoothest tutorials I’ve ever seen. So easy to understand. Thank you so much.
Couldn’t thank you more. I had uninstalled audacity after getting stuck. Thanks to you I can use it again for my podcasting.
